Feature Exhibit: Bodwell Granite Company Store
1858-1919
The Bodwell Granite Company Store was the most ambitious retail venture ever operated in the town of Vinalhaven. Anyone on Vinalhaven could shop at the Bodwell Granite Company Store, but it was operated primarily for quarry workers employed by Bodwell Granite Company. Workers could make purchases at the Company Store between paydays using "trade tickets" or company-issued scrip. When payday finally arrived, many workers had little left unspent.

The Museum will feature a display which recreates the interior of a typical general store and will examine the economic and social impact of the Company Store on the lives of Vinalhaven's granite workers and thier families. Included will be actual Bodwell account ledgers, artifacts, photos, company scrip and material unearthed during Cynthia Martin's research.

Memorial Hall - 35 Years
The Museum is also celebrating the Memorial Hall 35 years after it was torn down. There will be a display in the Museum as well as a program at the Smith Hokanson Memorial Hall with islanders recalling the many wonderful activities held there.
