Granite By The Sea: The History of Granite Quarrying on Vinalhaven Island 1826-1939 A Film by: Army Armstrong and the Vinalhaven Historical Society DVD $17.95 (Maine residents add .90 tax) VHS $12.95 (Maine residents add .70 tax) (shipping add @2.25) Vinalhaven Island, 15 miles off the Maine coast, has always been a fishing and lobstering center but for over 100 years it also played an important role in the building of America's cities. Many tons of granite were quarried from the island's bedrock and were cut, shaped and carved to be shipped by schooners, sloops and lighters to the East and Gulf coasts and as far west as Kansas City. The story is told using superb pictures taken by local photographers from the 1870s to the 1930s. We are shown workers from Scotland, Scandinavia, New England and Maritime Canada, the ingenious methods they devised for handling the stone, as well as some of the finished granite at such structures as the New York Customs House and columns for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. 29 Minutes. 2002.
