BODWELL GRANITE COMPANY STORE 1858-1919 |
Feature Exhibit: Bodwell Granite Company Store 1858-1919
The Bodwell Granite Company Store was the most ambitious retail venture ever operated in the town of Vinalhaven. Anyone on Vinalhaven could shop at the Bodwell Granite Company Store, but it was operated primarily for quarry workers employed by Bodwell Granite Company. Workers could make purchases at the Company Store between paydays using "trade tickets" or company-issued scrip. When payday finally arrived, many workers had little left unspent.

The Museum recreated the interior of a typical general store and focused on the economic and social impact of the Company Store on the lives of Vinalhaven's granite workers and thier families. Included was the actual Bodwell account ledgers, artifacts, photos, company scrip and material unearthed during Cynthia Martin's research.
